Ritaban Das is working on a new project – Check this out!

Comics, arts and international relations

The most significant way of expression throughout history has been, is, and is going to be art. Artists are those people who will express themselves no matter the circumstances – there has to be room for critical thinking, or an artist will make that room. We had the opportunity to chat with illustrator Ritaban Das, about his and his partner in crime Ritabrata’s newest project and other things. Check it out!

Hi! What’s up? How you doin’?
Hello, I’m doing good. Little bit tied up with work lately, that’s it! Hope you guys are doing well too. 🙂

Your current project – this one – tell us a little bit about it, how did it happen and what’s it all about?
First of all I just want to add that both the characters of our web comics is highly inspired by two iconic fictional characters named “Byomkesh Bakshi” and “Feluda” written by two great writers of India, Sharadindu Bandyopadhyay and Satyajit Ray.

The idea of “Two Detectives” came to Ritabrata’s mind long ago and he loosely tells me the story. I instantly liked the idea but didn’t know what to do with it because initially I wanted to make a small animated short. But then I realized it would take a huge time to animate the whole thing. Then I decided to make a web comic where I could handle the entire art section solely by myself. As a comic book lover I always wanted to make one and this was absolutely the perfect thing he could have offered me. He then pen down a small script and I start making it.
How do you feel working with Ritabrata on this piece of art? How’s it working in a duo on a project like this?
Working with my brother Ritabrata is quite fun and easy cuz’ we almost share the same interests in every creative aspects. Being knowing him since ages have eased my task in this case. We always brainstorm, imbibe each others ideas and inputs and work in this project.
Fusing writing and illustration to send a message could be awesomely great – what message do you want to send out to the world?
They say a picture is worth a thousand words. So why write a thousand words when you can say it with an image?. Illustration means to show or demonstrate something clearly. An effective illustrated writing clearly demonstrates and supports a point through the use of evidence. Words and images complement each other. And since writing is an art, writing and art can live side by side, coming together to keep you inspired and motivated.
Art is important to bring out political messages as well, and invite for conversation. What are your thoughts on that?
The past and present centuries have been awash with artistic productions and cultural practises that speak towards political life – whether dynamic or static. Arts and culture have played a big influence and role in influencing society and public discourse and participation in politics. The arts and culture have been catalysts for positive social change and transformation.
They represent the ideals, norms and standard acceptable group behaviours with which a people identify with and are obliged to comply for the sake of social harmony and co-habitation – crudely understood as social order. It is the idealism of a normative world that artistic and cultural acts seek to raise by exposing socio-economic and political ills.
We heard something about new music coming up as well, could you tell us more about that?
Yes, I’m the part of a small music project called “Simplers’ Project” as a singer/songwriter and we are cooking some new music. Been working really hard on our debut album “Into the Woods” which is gonna come out probably early next year. We released two singles from there and got a good response til now. You can hear them here and here.

Check out our Facebook page “Simplers’ Project” for more updates. 🙂
