Name: Chie Yoshii

Where do you live: Pasadena, CA, USA

Known for: Painting

Currently working on: Several paintings for group shows in summer and a solo show in spring 2016.

When did you realize that you were going to work with this?
Mid 2014 to 2 months ago.

If you could choose one place only to live, where would that be and why?
The idea of settling in one place is suffocating to me. Ideally I want to be able to live in many places and always be ready to leave.

How would you describe your creativity?
Grounded.

How and when did you start to work with this in a serious manner?
3 years ago when I started painting full time.

What do you do at the moment?
I’m working on several paintings for group shows in summer and a solo show in spring 2016, and also producing some prints to finally start my online store in May.

A recommendation for those who think about starting and running a creative business?
To know yourself! I’m still working on it.

Tell us how it all started.
The desire to be a painter was always there from my childhood. But I first chose more practical path and occupation. I took various evening/weekend art classes, until I finally started studying oil painting under Adrian Gottlieb in 2002. I stayed with him for 6 years. After that, I started painting on my own, and gradually worked up the courage to be a full time painter in 2012.

What is the most important thing in a workplace/studio for you?
Comfort.

What is your favorite film?
Zigeunerweisen by Seijun Suzuki, Cabaret by Bob Fosse. I love movies that combines music and striking visuals with a touch of darkness and humor.

Who would you like to invite for a dinner and why?
My family in Japan. I wish I could cook for them.

How do you like to spoil yourself?
By taking a long bath.

What is luxury for you?
To do what you love and be able to share it with others.

What is the nicest compliment you’ve received for your creative work, and from whom?
I love hearing any comments from anybody. I love to know how my paintings evoke different things in various people.

What do you fear most?
Stagnation.

What is a happy life to you?
Life with contentment.

What does a regular day look like for you?
Paint from 8 am to 7 pm and relax and sleep at night.

Tell us about your dream project.
The projects that I’m working on right now! I cannot see further than that.

Who is your professional role model/inspiration?
Everybody and also nobody. I learn many things from different people, but in the end I just want to realize myself.

How would you describe your work style (academic field or fashion style, or both, or something entirely different)?
Combination of Symbolism, Surrealism and Aestheticism.

Which is the one thing you can’t live without?
Possibility.

What inspires you?
Beauty.

A book that has changed/made the most impression in your life?
Man and his symbols by Carl Jung. This book explained to me why I paint what I paint.
