In a few days, we will be celebrating the birth of our nation states. The original 13 states were New Hampshire, New York, Delaware, North Carolina, Massachusetts, New Jersey, Maryland, South Carolina, Rhode Island, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Georgia and Connecticut. I say nation states because that is what was proposed and formed in our founding documents. We are Mainers, a separate and independent nation state. Just like any other nation in the world. The newly formed nation states have delegated to the United States of America 19 listed powers to conduct international affairs among other nations of the world. This was done by the Constitution of the United States of America.
Quote the last paragraph of the Declaration of Independence:
“We, therefore, the representatives of the United States of America, assembled in the General Congress, appealing to the supreme judge of the world for the rectitude of our intentions, do, in the name and by the authority of the good people of these colonies, publish and solemnly declare that these united colonies are, and as of right must be, free and independent States, that they are absolved of all allegiance to the British Crown, and that all political relations between them and the State of Great Britain , is and must be completely dissolved; and that as free and independent states they have full power to raise war, make peace, make alliances, establish commerce, and do all other acts and things that independent states can do law. And in support of this Declaration, with firm confidence in the protection of Divine Providence, we commit our lives, our fortunes and our sacred honor to each other.
These 56 men who signed the Declaration knew full well that they would be hunted down and if caught they would be tried by the crown and hanged for treason. These great and honorable men who imagined and gave birth to the nation states that formed America. I thank you.
