New Delhi:
Aparna Yadav, the sister-in-law of Samajwadi party leader Akhilesh Yadav, joined the BJP in Delhi today to deliver a blow to the party ahead of next month’s elections in Uttar Pradesh. Ms Yadav is also the daughter-in-law of Samajwadi Party founder, Mulayam Singh Yadav.

Here are 5 points on the latest BJP recruit in UP:

  1. Aparna Yadav, 32, is married to Prateek Yadav, 34, leader of the Samajwadi party and younger brother of former UP chief minister Akhilesh Yadav. The two married in 2011 and have a daughter. Akhilesh Yadav is widely seen as the biggest challenge to the ruling BJP’s re-election hope in the UP.

  2. The daughter of a former journalist, Mrs. Yadav studied at the famous Loreto convent in Lucknow. She holds a degree in English Literature and another in International Relations and Politics from the University of Manchester in England.

  3. Ms Yadav made her political debut – becoming the 22nd member of the Yadav family to do so – in the 2017 UP elections, as the Samajwadi candidate from the Lucknow cantonment headquarters. She was defeated by BJP’s Ritu Bahugana Joshi (a former Congress leader) by almost 34,000 votes.

  4. She runs an organization – bAware – which works for women’s issues and also runs a cow shelter in Lucknow. Given her family’s political ties, she raised her eyebrows for praising the BJP; today she said: ‘I have always been inspired by Prime Minister Modi.’

  5. Last month, however, she criticized the BJP for its grandstanding over building women’s bathrooms. She referred to the founder of Samajwadi, Mulayam Singh Yadav, and said he too had built bathrooms and given LPG (kitchen) gas cylinders to women, but had never posed for pictures.
