Turkey at the Doha Forum 2022

Recently, Turkey has become one of the most talked about nations in the world. Not only the strong leadership of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, but also Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu, Defense Minister Hulusi Akar and Presidential Spokesperson Ibrahim Kalın, who participated in the DOHA 2022 Forum, were at the top of the global agenda.

With 20 years of experience, the DOHA Forum is an international platform that welcomes participants from all corners of the world to discuss the critical challenges facing the world, promote the exchange of ideas and offer policy-oriented recommendations. towards action. The DOHA 2022 Forum opened with a comprehensive address by the Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, covering some of the world’s most pressing issues: the climate crisis, rising Islamophobia and xenophobia in the West, refugee crises caused by wars and income inequality. , Afghanistan and the diplomatic mission of Qatar.

Held in the shadow of the Russian-Ukrainian war, the DOHA Forum hosts many discussions on the implications of the ongoing battle for the international system. After an exhibition of the Afghan girls’ robotic team, representatives and former administrators from Afghanistan spoke in many sessions due to Qatar’s humanitarian diplomacy in Afghanistan.

US business tycoon Bill Gates and European Commission Vice President Josep Borrell were among the forum’s keynote speakers. Ukrainian Deputy Foreign Minister Emine Dzhaparova delivered a very cautious speech calling for peace in Ukraine. Presenting Ukraine’s demands in a reasonable manner, Dzhaparova delivered a calm speech despite the heat of the ongoing war.

The forum’s most engaging speeches were delivered by Turkish government officials, to whom participants listened attentively. In her interview with Turkish Foreign Minister Çavuşoğlu, renowned CNBC anchor Hadley Gamble asked several questions about Turkey’s struggles in the international arena. Giving clear and strong answers, Çavuşoğlu received enthusiastic applause from the participants.

Regarding Russia’s attack on Ukraine, representatives of Western countries did not make any constructive recommendations to resolve the ongoing crisis. On the other hand, Turkish representatives stressed the need for a diplomatic and political resolution of the Russian-Ukrainian war by offering concrete proposals.

Like Turkish Defense Minister Akar’s catchy speech, Presidential Spokesperson Kalın’s speech on Turkey’s mediating role in the Russian-Ukrainian conflict was captivating. Quoting Islamic scholar al-Ghazali, Kalın remarked that “principles overstepping their bounds become their opposites”, emphasizing the need to act with caution in such a critical and fragile situation.

Demonstrating Turkey’s rise as a regional power under the charismatic leadership of President Erdoğan, participants were curious about the upcoming elections in Turkey in 2023. As a result, representatives of Western countries made several business and political offers to Turkish representatives . They were eager to establish closer relations with Turkey with great regret that they had ignored such a rising power in the recent past.

In the ongoing Russian-Ukrainian war, Turkey has proven its worth as a regional power. Received a standing ovation from delegations from both warring parties in Istanbul, President Erdoğan represents Turkey’s international status as a reliable and effective regional power. Western states also support Turkey’s crucial role in mediating the current crisis.

President Erdoğan conducted a diplomatic process “finer than a hair, sharper than a sword”. As international relations experts speculate about the start of World War III, history will hopefully record Turkey’s contribution to world peace.
