WASHINGTON, DC, July 18, 2021 (WAM) – At the end of a week-long visit to Washington, DC, Dr Anwar Gargash, diplomatic adviser to President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, called the relationship UAE-US as strong as it has ever been and noted that the US is the UAE’s “most important and long-lasting strategic partner”.
During his visit, Dr Gargash met with senior officials of the Biden administration and members of Congress to discuss regional issues of mutual concern and underlined the strength of the UAE-US partnership.
He was accompanied by Yousef Al Otaiba, Minister of State of the United Arab Emirates and Ambassador to the United States; and Lana Nusseibeh, Permanent Representative of the United Arab Emirates to the United Nations and Deputy Minister for Political Affairs.
“The United States is one of our most important relationships. It is as close and strong as it has ever been with the Biden administration,” said Dr Gargash. “In our 50th year, the vision and shared values of the UAE with the United States are well appreciated.”
In a White House briefing with National Security Council coordinator for the Middle East and North Africa Brett McGurk and other senior officials, Dr Gargash highlighted the UAE’s renewed focus on diplomacy and de-escalation. He reaffirmed the UAE’s commitment to work closely with the United States on regional issues and explored ways to build on the Abrahamic Accords peace accord between the UAE and Israel to bring greater regional prosperity and stability.
The senior UAE diplomat also met with Wendy Sherman, Assistant Secretary of State, to discuss ways in which the UAE and the United States can step up cooperation to resolve regional conflicts and pressing global challenges such as climate change, the COVID-19 pandemic and nuclear proliferation.
In meetings at the United States Capitol, Dr Gargash highlighted the UAE’s forward-looking approach to building a more tolerant, prosperous and peaceful region that advances the collective interests and values of the UAE and the United States, and develop bilateral trade and investment relations.
He also met with Senator Bill Hagerty (TN), Senator Todd Young (IN) and Senator Jeff Merkley (OR).
Dr Gargash and other senior UAE officials also announced a new partnership between the Anwar Gargash Diplomatic Academy and the Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies to train the next generation of young relationship leaders. international.
Dr Gargash concluded his visit by meeting with senior officials from the Smithsonian Institution. Officials discussed areas of collaboration and preparations for the 2022 Smithsonian Folklife Festival, where the United Arab Emirates will be the guest country. The annual event takes place at the National Mall in Washington, DC, and attracts over a million visitors.
