Halvarson joins sports communications as director of social and digital media

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Axel Halvarson joined Bellarmine University’s athletics department as assistant director of sports communications specializing in social and digital media, director of athletics Scott Wiegandt announced Friday.

Halvarson’s primary duties will include overseeing social media accounts for Bellarmine sports teams, producing digital signage at home events, and creating and editing additional video content for many of the company’s events and platforms. Knights.

Halvarson was an integral part of the sports communications department long before joining the staff in his current position. Concluding with the 2021-22 academic year, he spent six years working on the team in a variety of roles while a student at Bellarmine.

During his four years as an undergraduate student and two as a graduate assistant, Halvarson’s duties shifted from camera work, music playback and dashboard operation to production of every home event live on GLVCSN and coverage of all aspects of sporting events on social media. In 2020, his final year as an undergraduate, he produced all of the GLVC Tournament broadcasts for both women’s and men’s competitions.

In the 2021-22 academic year, after Halvarson’s role became the department’s primary social media content manager, Bellarmine Athletics’ total Instagram footprint grew by 26%. According to Hoops Power Analytics, the Knights men’s basketball Instagram account was the third fastest growing account in all of men’s college basketball in March 2022.

Halvarson created an ASUN Championship graphic highlighting the 2022 men’s basketball title that topped 1.7 million impressions across multiple social media platforms.

“Axel proved to be an invaluable member of our sports communication team as a hardworking student at Bellarmine, and I couldn’t be more excited to have the opportunity to bring him back,” Wiegandt said. “As we all know, social media has become the primary form of program coverage and media coverage in college athletics, as well as a vital part of connecting with our student-athletes, our fans, and beyond. With Axel guiding the ship, our social media in this ever-changing area of ​​communications, I know that our department will continue to grow and thrive under Axel’s leadership in this area.

Halvarson earned a double major in communications and sports administration at Bellarmine. He earned his master’s degree in communications. A native of Louisville, he attended Trinity High School.
