Vietnam reaffirmed its commitment to international peace, stability and cooperation with Korea by celebrating National Day and the 30th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Vietnam and Korea on Friday at the Lotte Hotel in Seoul.

Vietnam Independence Day, which falls on Friday, commemorates Vietnam’s declaration of independence from France and the reading of Vietnam’s declarations of independence by Vietnam’s first president Ho Chi Minh in the square Ba Dinh in Hanoi in 1945.

Vietnam was a French colony from 1877 to 1945.

In a welcoming speech at the ceremony, Vietnamese Ambassador to South Korea Nguyen Vu Tung recalled his country’s 30-year struggle for independence under the leadership of the Communist Party of Vietnam and President Ho Chi Minh.

Tung pointed to Vietnam’s “Doi Moi” reforms to realize national development projects in politics, economy, society and international relations.

Doi Moi (restoration) refers to the economic reform policies carried out by Vietnam from 1986 according to which Vietnam opened its economy to capitalism while remaining politically a socialist republic.

According to Tung, Vietnam aims to upgrade its industry, become an upper-middle-income country by 2030 and become a high-income developed nation by 2045.

“Vietnam has a dynamic and economically closely linked global and regional economy,” Tung said.

Tung said Vietnam is now a cohesive country that actively contributes to global and regional peace, stability and cooperation.

“Vietnam needs additional qualitative achievements in its development strategy to achieve these goals,” Tung said, referring to challenges in areas such as new resources and materials, digital economy, climate change response in recent geopolitical and geoeconomic situations.

He stressed the need to develop the management system, infrastructure development and human education to seize the opportunities arising from these problems.

Tung said Vietnam is a reliable friend and partner of the world and the region, and follows a peaceful international path to create an environment of peace, stability and cooperation to focus its capabilities on national development projects.

“Vietnam will continue to actively and proactively contribute to regional peace and stability with other countries,” he said, stressing the role of international support for Vietnam’s success.

Vietnam and Korea have built dynamic relations, a comprehensive strategic partnership based on mutual understanding, trust, intertwined national interests, cultural and social similarities strongly supported by the peoples and governments of the two countries, Xi said. Tung.

“In 2021-2024, Vietnam will be responsible for coordinating Korea-ASEAN relations,” Tung said.

Meanwhile, South Korean Foreign Minister Park Jin also delivered a speech, congratulating Vietnam’s 77th National Day and the 30th anniversary of Vietnam-Korea diplomatic relations.

Park said the trade volume between Korea and Vietnam increased 160 times from 30 years ago in 2021, exceeding $80 billion.

“South Korea is Vietnam’s biggest investor,” Kim said, referring to the 8,000 Korean companies, including Samsung and LG, investing in Vietnam and contributing to the economic development of the two countries.

Over 4 million Koreans visited Vietnam every year before COVID-19, Koreans account for the largest proportion of foreigners visiting Vietnam in 2022, he said, highlighting people-to-people exchanges.

The minister said that about 80,000 Vietnamese students studying in Korea and the Korean-Vietnamese multicultural families serve as a bridge for cultural exchange.

Park recalled his visit to Vietnam with former South Korean President Kim Young-sam – the Korean president’s first visit to Vietnam in 1996.

“I was presidential secretary at that time,” he said.

He also recalled his visit to Samsung’s factory in Vietnam’s Yen Phong Industrial Complex as chairman of Samsung’s Foreign Affairs, Trade and National Assembly Unification Committee.

The factory has become a symbol of Korea-Vietnam economic cooperation.

Vietnam and Korea are currently strengthening cooperation on issues such as supply chain restoration and climate change, Park said.

Noting the Korean government’s most recent policies on Vietnam, Park pointed to Vietnam’s current status as the coordinator of the Korea-ASEAN dialogue.

“President Yun Seok-yeol’s government is focused on developing relations with ASEAN,” Park said.

“Vietnam is Korea’s main partner in ASEAN,” he added.

“Friends support each other and share difficulties and joys,” Park concluded, referring to a Vietnamese proverb.
